Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies....

Y'all remember that song? I've had it in my head all week. I learned it in the 5th grade and still remember every single word.

If you want to revisit childhood memories or have never heard of the song, I found it on youtube! Ha!

Sorry this is another two weeks into one entry. We had a nasty stomach virus a couple of weeks ago, followed by strep, so we did enough school to keep us on track and saved projects for this week.

This week we began our study on each state, as it entered the Union. So we learned about Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Georgia.

In honor of Pennsylvania, the children made a model of the Liberty Bell and for Georgia, peach cobbler. The cobbler was incredibly simple with an oat and spelt crust.

We're off school this upcoming week, for Thanksgiving. We're going to read a couple of books on the topic though and may even take a trip to Alabama, depending on how things pan out.

Rewind. Again.

My battery died last week, so I was unable to take pictures until the end of the week, thus no blog before now. Sorry.

Over the past two weeks, we've learned about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the 13 colonies, Paul Revere, The Declaration of Independence, the history and creation of the US flag, Flag Day, Independence Day, and The Revolutionary War. We also had a great time at the Fall Festival at church and PE.

And top news! Elena read her first words today. She was very proud and even surprised at how well she did. :)

Jared and Elena (aka The Twins) are very close. Elena crawled up to Jared, wrapped her arms around him and said, "I love you, Jared," and he replied, "I love you, too, Elena." In a world where squabbling siblings is considered the norm, their exchange thrilled my heart.

Elena holding up her copy of the Declaration of Independence for her History notebook. While we were at Hobby Lobby earlier today, the children saw a beautifully framed copy of the Declaration and they were excited to see it and recognize John Hancock's signature.

Pictures from PE! Camden so wants to join in with the other children, but for right now, he's content to sit in the doorway and toss balls back to the group.
